“Bored” game: motivate students to drill practice spots - level Beginner/Intermediate

Posted on May 17, 2008 by Abigail McHugh in - Practice Motivators

Thanks to Carey Beth Hockett

In order to encourage the student to repeat a difficult practice spot many, many times, Carey asked if the student liked board games, and then offered to teach him her favorite “bored” game when he affirmed that he did. The competition consisted of taking turns to play the passage over and over again, until someone (the loser) got bored and gave up. This might not fool all kids, but the ones I’ve tried it with are just delighted to play a tricky spot over and over again, ad nauseam, in order to win the game.

That is such a brilliant idea - thank you! I\'m going to try it in my daughter\'s cello practice today.
